When to plant cucumbers in the UK comes down to two dates rather than one. Sow the seed indoors in April, and plant out only from late May into June, once the nights have stopped dropping into single figures. Greenhouse plants can go into their final position a week or two earlier. Sow much before April and you end up nursing a leggy plant on a windowsill for weeks; plant out much before late May and the cold checks it so hard that a later plant will overtake it. June is not late. June is safe.

Cucumbers are the crop that taught me patience, mostly by punishing me for not having any. For years I sowed them in March along with everything else, because March is when the gardening itch gets unbearable and seed packets are sitting there looking at you. Every year the same thing happened. The seeds came up beautifully, the plants grew fast, and then they sat on the windowsill through a cold April going pale and floppy while I waited for the weather. By the time it was safe to put them out they were exhausted.

Why Cucumbers Are So Fussy About Timing

Cucumbers come from hot places and they have never really got over it. They want warmth in the air, warmth in the soil, and no sudden shocks in between. Where a broad bean or a lettuce shrugs off a cold snap, a cucumber takes it personally.

The thing that catches people out is that cold rarely kills them outright. It would almost be easier if it did. What actually happens is subtler and more annoying: the plant stops. The leaves go a slightly dull, bluish green, growth halts, and it sits there doing nothing for two or three weeks. Then it slowly picks up again, but it never quite makes up the ground it lost. Meanwhile a plant sown a fortnight later, into warmer conditions, sails past it and crops first. I have run that accidental experiment more times than I care to admit, and the later plant wins nearly every time.

So the whole timing question is really about avoiding checks. Warm start, warm move outside, no gaps in between. Get that right and cucumbers are among the most productive things in the garden. Get it wrong and you spend all summer wondering why yours look so miserable.

Month by Month: When to Sow and Plant Cucumbers

February and March: too early, whatever the seed packet says

There is no useful reason to sow cucumbers this early unless you have a heated greenhouse and are growing for an early indoor crop. On a windowsill you will get germination and then a long, miserable holding pattern. If the itch is unbearable, sow chillies instead, which genuinely do need the long run, and leave the cucumbers alone.

April: sow indoors, and this is the one that matters

April is the sweet spot for most UK gardens. Sow one seed per small pot, on its side rather than flat, about a centimetre and a half deep, and keep it somewhere properly warm to germinate. A propagator at around 21C is ideal, but the airing cupboard or the top of the fridge works perfectly well for the few days it takes. The moment they are up, get them into the brightest place you own. This is where most windowsill cucumbers are lost. Warm and dim gives you a pale, stretched, weak-stemmed thing that never recovers. Bright and slightly cooler gives you a stocky plant. If you only remember one thing from this section, make it that.

May: the month that trips everyone up

May is when the garden centres fill up with cucumber plants and the sun comes out and everybody, myself included, gets ideas. Resist for a bit longer. Early May nights in most of the country still fall to five or six degrees, and that is enough to check a cucumber badly.

What May is genuinely for is preparation. Pot your seedlings on if they are outgrowing their pots, get the bed ready, and start hardening the plants off towards the end of the month. Cucumbers are more sensitive to that move than almost anything else I grow, so give them a full week to ten days of going out by day and coming in at night rather than rushing it in a weekend. A greenhouse changes the maths: plants can go into their final greenhouse position from mid May in most years.

Late May and June: plant outdoors

This is the window. Once the frost risk has properly gone and night temperatures are holding above about ten degrees, cucumbers can go outside and they will romp. You can also sow ridge varieties straight into the ground now, which is my preferred method for outdoor cucumbers these days because a direct-sown plant never suffers a transplant check at all. Sow two or three seeds at each station and thin to the strongest.

Do not fret if you are reading this in mid June with nothing sown. Cucumbers grow so fast in warm conditions that a June sowing catches up remarkably quickly, and it will still crop into September. July onwards: leave it for next year

An early July sowing in a greenhouse might just about give you a late crop in a good year. Outdoors it is a gamble not worth taking, because the plant will only be hitting its stride as the light goes and the nights cool. Sow something quick instead and come back to cucumbers in April.

Greenhouse or Outdoors, and Why the Variety Matters

This trips up more beginners than the timing does, and it is entirely avoidable. Cucumbers come in two broad types and they are not interchangeable. Greenhouse varieties want heat and shelter and produce long smooth fruit. Ridge varieties are bred for outdoor life, and their fruit is shorter, often knobbly, and to my mind better flavoured. Marketmore is the one I keep going back to for outdoors: reliable, heavy cropping, and forgiving of a British summer.

Sowing a greenhouse variety outdoors is the classic mistake, and it produces a sulky plant and a small, disappointing crop no matter how well you time everything else. Check the packet before you buy, not after.

There is one more quirk worth knowing about greenhouse types. Most modern ones are all-female varieties, which fruit without pollination. If a plant gets stressed it can throw out male flowers anyway, and if those pollinate the females you get bitter cucumbers. It is the single most common cause of a bitter homegrown cucumber, and the fix is simply to pinch out any male flowers you spot, the ones with a plain stalk rather than a tiny fruit swelling behind the bloom.

Soil Warmth and Where to Put Them

Air temperature gets all the attention but soil temperature does more of the work. Cucumbers want soil that has genuinely warmed through, somewhere around 15C, and cold wet soil in May is the reason a lot of early plantings stall. If you want to hurry it along, cover the planting area with a sheet of black plastic or some cloches for a fortnight beforehand. It makes a bigger difference than it has any right to.

For position, they want full sun, shelter from wind, and rich soil that holds moisture without turning into a bog. Wind is the underrated one. Those big soft leaves tear and dry out in an exposed spot, and a plant that spends its life being battered never crops properly. I dig in a couple of buckets of well-rotted compost at each planting station a few weeks ahead, and on poorer ground I add a handful of chicken manure pellets at the same time. If your ground stays wet, it is worth sorting out the drainage first, or growing in pots instead.

Growing Cucumbers in Pots

Pots suit cucumbers well, and they solve the soil warmth problem neatly because compost in a container heats up faster than open ground. Go big: at least 30cm across and deep, and bigger still if you can. The small pots people reach for are the reason so many container cucumbers wilt every afternoon and crop badly.

The trade-off is water. A cucumber in a pot in July can drink an astonishing amount, and if you let it dry out you get bitter fruit, dropped flowers and a plant that sulks for a week. Planting Out, Step by Step

Harden the plants off properly over a week to ten days, then choose a mild, still, overcast day rather than a blazing one. Water the plants an hour before you move them so the rootball is damp and holds together. Dig a hole a little larger than the pot, ease the plant out without pulling on the stem, and plant it at the same depth it was growing before. Cucumbers do not like being buried deeper the way tomatoes do; a buried stem is an invitation to rot.

Firm gently, water generously, and get the support in on the same day rather than promising yourself you will do it later. Then, if there is any doubt about the nights, throw fleece or a cloche over them for the first week. That fortnight after planting is when a cucumber decides whether it is going to be a good plant or a mediocre one.

What Goes Wrong When the Timing Is Off

Almost every cucumber complaint I get asked about traces back to the calendar rather than to pests or disease. Plants put out too early stall and sit blue-tinged and sullen for weeks. Seedlings started too early stretch into weak, leggy things that never build a decent root system. And plants that were checked at any point crop later and less, which is how people end up with one cucumber in September rather than a glut in August.

The other one worth naming is the collapse. A young plant that goes out into cold soil, gets watered with cold water, and then meets a chilly night can wilt and die within days, and it looks exactly like a disease. Usually it is just cold. Support, Feeding and Watering Through Summer

Grow them upwards. A cucumber sprawling across the soil gives you dirty fruit, slug damage and mildew, while the same plant on a trellis, netting or a string in the greenhouse stays cleaner, healthier and much easier to pick. Tie them in every few days early on, because the tendrils are not strong enough to hold a laden stem on their own.

Feeding is simple. Nothing much until the first fruits start to swell, then a high-potash liquid feed every ten to fourteen days. Feeding hard before that just gives you a monstrous leafy plant with little to show for it. Watering is where the real skill sits, and consistency beats volume every time. Cucumbers that swing between dry and drenched give bitter fruit and drop their young fruitlets, so a steady soak at the base every couple of days beats a daily splash on the leaves. How Long From Sowing to Picking

Seed to first cucumber is usually somewhere between eight and twelve weeks depending on warmth. Germination takes about a week to ten days, the plant establishes over a few weeks, and fruiting starts roughly six to eight weeks after planting out. An April sowing planted out in late May generally means cucumbers from mid July, running on into September.

Once they start, pick constantly. Cucumbers are ready when they are firm, evenly green and a good size for the variety, and the mistake is waiting for them to get bigger. A fruit left to swell on the plant tells it the job is done and cropping slows right down. I pick every couple of days at the peak, and a plant treated that way will keep going for weeks longer than one that is harvested casually.

Regional Differences Across the UK

The month-by-month above is written for the middle of the country. In southern England you can usually work a week or two earlier, and outdoor cucumbers are genuinely reliable. Across the Midlands the dates as written are about right. In northern England, Scotland and anywhere exposed or high up, push everything back a fortnight and think seriously about a greenhouse, polytunnel or at least a sheltered wall, because outdoor ridge cucumbers can be hard work in a poor summer.

The Mistakes Worth Avoiding

Five things account for most cucumber disappointment, and four of them are about timing. Sowing too early and keeping plants indoors too long. Planting out before the nights have settled. Skipping or rushing the hardening off, which cucumbers punish more than most crops. Using pots that are too small. And letting the watering become erratic once the fruit starts, which is what turns a good plant bitter.

Cucumbers sit with the tender crops, which means they follow the same rules as courgettes, tomatoes, runner beans and french beans. Sow them indoors in spring, plant them out after the frosts, and keep them growing steadily.
