When to plant vegetables in the UK follows the seasons more than any fixed calendar, but the short version is this: sow hardy crops from March, wait until after the last frost in late May for tender ones, and keep sowing something almost every month from spring to late summer. Get the timing roughly right and vegetables more or less grow themselves. Get it wrong, sowing tender crops too early or hardy ones too late, and you fight the weather all season for a disappointing result. This month-by-month guide covers what to sow and plant across the whole year, and links through to the detailed guide for each crop.

Some of the links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy something through one of them I may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. I only ever point you towards kit I would happily use in my own garden.

After twenty years of growing vegetables on heavy Oxfordshire clay, the single most useful thing I have learned is that timing beats effort. You can do everything else right, feed and water and weed with the best of them, but if you sow at the wrong moment the plant is fighting the season from day one. The good news is that the timing itself is simple once you see the shape of the year, and this page is the map I wish I had when I started.

The Whole Year at a Glance

Why Timing Matters So Much Here

The whole of vegetable timing turns on one distinction: hardy crops versus tender ones. Hardy vegetables like peas, broad beans, onions, carrots and the brassicas shrug off cold and can go in from early spring. Tender crops like tomatoes, courgettes, runner beans and cucumbers are killed by frost and must wait until it has passed, usually late May. Sort every crop into one of those two camps and half the confusion disappears.

The reason it matters so much in the UK is our short, unpredictable season. Sow a tender crop too early and one cold night undoes months of work. Sow a hardy crop too late and it never bulks up before the light fades. There is a right window for each, and hitting it is the difference between vegetables that thrive and vegetables that limp along. If you are just starting out, gardening for beginners and easy vegetables to grow are good companions to this page.

Frost Dates, Without Obsessing Over Them

Almost all the tender-crop timing hangs on your last frost date, the point in spring after which a killing frost is unlikely. It varies enormously across the country, from March in the mildest south western spots to well into May in the cold north, so a national date is close to useless. The last frost dates by postcode guide gives you a figure for where you actually garden.

That said, do not become a slave to it. A frost date is an average, not a guarantee, so watch the actual forecast in the fortnight before you plant tender crops and keep some fleece to hand for a surprise cold night. Some crops that survive a light frost are more forgiving still, covered in vegetables that survive late frost. Use the date as a guide, then trust your eyes and the weather.

Winter Into Early Spring: January to March

January and February are mostly for planning and preparation rather than sowing. This is when I order seed, clean pots, and get beds dug over and improved while there is time, work that pays off all year. If you have a heated propagator you can make an early start on chillies, peppers and onions from seed in February, since those slow crops genuinely need the long run, but there is no rush with anything else. Improving the soil now, covered in improving garden soil, does more for your season than any early sowing.

March is when the season finally stirs. Hardy crops can be sown outdoors from late in the month once the soil is workable, including peas, broad beans, early carrots and the first salads, while indoors you can start tomatoes and much else under cover. It is tempting to go mad the moment the sun appears, but cold soil in early March rots seed as readily as it sprouts it, so let the ground warm and sow into it rather than into a cold, wet bed.

The Big Months: April and May

April is one of the busiest sowing months of the year. Potatoes, onions, beetroot, lettuce and many more can go in, and tender crops get sown indoors ready for planting out next month. Keep fleece to hand, though, because April frosts are common and can catch out anything tender you have hardening off.

May is the turning point and the busiest month of all. It is the main sowing month for direct-sown crops, and from the second half of the month, once the frosts have gone, the tender crops finally go outside: tomatoes, courgettes, runner beans, cucumbers and sweetcorn. There is a full rundown in what to plant in May. Watch the nights rather than the calendar, and do not let a warm early May fool you into rushing the tender crops out before the end of the month.

High Summer: June, July and August

By June the frosts are gone everywhere and the garden is in full swing. Any tender crops not yet out can still go in, and the focus shifts towards succession sowing, putting in a short row of fast crops like salads, carrots and beetroot every couple of weeks so you never have a glut or a gap. There is more in what to plant in June, and much of the month is about care rather than sowing, especially watering as things warm up.

July and August are about keeping things going and looking ahead. Fast crops like lettuce and radish can still be sown, and from August you start sowing for autumn and winter: winter salads, spinach and the first overwintering crops, just as the summer beds begin to clear. Watering is the main job in the heat, and a plant that dries out repeatedly in July is the one that bolts or fails to crop, as covered in why vegetables fail.

Autumn and Winter: September Onwards

September slows the pace. There is still winter salad and spinach to sow, and late in the month is the time to plant garlic and overwintering onions, which need the cold to grow well. Mostly, though, it is about harvesting the main crops and starting to prepare beds for winter as they empty.

From October through December there is little sowing to do, and the work turns to soil and tidying. Clearing spent crops, adding compost, mulching beds and protecting the soil over winter is what sets up next year, and it is genuinely the most valuable time you can spend in the garden even though nothing is growing. Rest, plan, order next year’s seed, and let the ground recover. The rhythm of the whole thing is laid out in what to do in the garden each month.

Where You Garden Changes the Dates

This calendar is written for the middle of the country, and the UK stretches it by a month from end to end. In the South West and along the south coast, mild winters and early springs let you sow earlier and harvest later, and tender crops are more reliable outdoors. London and the South East run similarly early, helped by city warmth. Across the Midlands the dates as written are about right.

In northern England, Scotland and anywhere high or exposed, push everything back a couple of weeks, lean on indoor starts and cloches, and choose hardy varieties that will stand a cold season. The single best guide is always local: a neighbour who has gardened the same street for twenty years knows the timing better than any national calendar can.

Pots Warm Faster Than the Ground

One useful trick worth knowing: compost in a container warms faster than open soil, so you can often sow or plant in pots a week or two earlier than in a bed, and move them under cover if a cold night threatens. For anyone gardening on a patio, a balcony, or heavy cold clay like mine, that flexibility is a real advantage, and it is covered in growing vegetables in pots.

The trade-off is water, since pots dry out far faster than the ground and need watching in summer. But for getting an early start, or for growing where you have no open soil at all, containers let you bend the calendar a little in your favour.

When to Plant Vegetables in the UK: Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to plant vegetables in the UK?

It depends on the crop. Hardy vegetables can be sown from March, while tender ones must wait until after the last frost in late May. Spring is the busiest sowing period, but something can go in most months from March to August.

Can I plant vegetables before the last frost?

Only hardy ones, like peas, broad beans, onions and brassicas, which tolerate cold. Tender crops such as tomatoes, courgettes and runner beans are killed by frost and must wait until it has passed.

What vegetables can I plant in early spring?

From March you can sow hardy crops outdoors as the soil warms: peas, broad beans, early carrots, salads, and start many others indoors. Potatoes and onions go in through April.

Is March too early to plant vegetables in the UK?

Not for hardy crops, which can be sown outdoors from late March once the soil is workable. It is too early for tender crops, and sowing into cold, wet soil early in the month often rots the seed.

When should I start planting vegetables outdoors?

Hardy crops from late March, and tender crops from the end of May once frost has passed. May is the main month for direct sowing and for planting out tender vegetables raised indoors.

What is the latest month to plant vegetables in the UK?

Fast crops like lettuce and radish can be sown into late summer, and winter salads, spinach and garlic go in through August and September. After that, sowing largely stops until spring.

Does planting time vary across the UK?

Yes, considerably. The mild South West can be a month ahead of the cold north, so use your local last frost date and, where possible, the timing your experienced neighbours follow.

Is it better to plant vegetables in pots earlier?

Often yes. Compost in a container warms faster than open ground, so you can usually sow or plant in pots a week or two earlier, and move them under cover if a cold night threatens.

A Sensible Place to Start

If the whole year feels like a lot to take in, reduce it to two ideas. Hardy crops can go in from March. Tender crops wait until the end of May. Sort everything you want to grow into one of those two groups and you have already avoided the mistakes that catch most beginners out.

Then just follow the season. Sow a little and often, watch the weather rather than the date for the tender crops, and lean on the individual crop guides linked throughout this page when you want the detail. Timing really is most of the battle in a UK vegetable garden, and once the shape of the year makes sense, the rest is far easier than it looks.
